 Game makers still disrespecting game media

My column today is on the latest instance of game publishers and developers trying to lean on the magazines and Web sites that cover the industry.

This time, the editor of Electronic Gaming Monthly is calling out Midway, Ubisoft and Sony for blackballing the magazine for too-tough previews and reviews.

Sigh.

I actually doubt that this misbehavior is any worse than it was in years past. In fact, I'm hopeful that all the controversy now is because the gaming media is starting to stand up for its editorial integrity, rather than just rolling over for the companies they're supposed to cover.

Kudos to EGM.

Hi Victor.

I read your article on the Dallas Morning News about the PS3 being outsold by the PS2 and wanted to respond. Unfortunately this is the only place I could do so.

In worldwide sales the PS3 is actually outselling the PS2 (its also outselling the 360). I wish American journos would look at the bigger picture sometimes because its total sales that are important not just one region.

Worldwide sales for December 2007;

Nintendo DS - 6,638,408
Nintendo Wii - 3,569,138
Sony PSP - 2,340,850
Sony PS3 - 2,000,575
Xbox 360 - 1,945,393
Sony PS2 - 1,899,588

Worldwide January 2008 sales so far;

Nintendo DS - 1,194,285
Nintendo Wii - 785,919
Sony PSP - 603,655
Sony PS3 - 421,129
Sony PS2 - 346,977
Xbox 360 - 339,928

If you want to be concerned about a console its the 360 that's the obvious candidate because it bombing outside the states. Even with its biggest game released last year it only sold 700k more worldwide than the far more expensive PS3 that didnt have any of its big exclsuives out.
